FAQ

Cold balls?
We can fix that.

Storage, reheating, allergens and ordering, answered straight. The puns stop where the food safety starts. If it's not here, ask us.

Reheat to 165°F (74°C) throughout. Check the broth and the centers of the matzo balls with a food thermometer.

Storage

How long does the soup keep in the freezer?

Keep it frozen at 0°F (-18°C) or colder. Use within 2 to 3 months for best quality. It stays safe longer than that, but the balls get a little less proud of themselves.

How long does it last after thawing?

Once thawed in the fridge, keep it at 40°F (4°C) or colder and use within 3 days. Don't refreeze a thawed quart.

Can I keep it in the fridge instead of the freezer?

If you're eating it within 3 days, yes. Otherwise put it in the freezer the day you get it.

Why is there a gap at the top of the container?

That's headspace. Soup expands when it freezes. The container is still a full quart: 4 cups of soup.

Reheating

Stovetop: how do I reheat it?

Thaw overnight in the fridge, or go straight from frozen if the block pops out of the container. Put it in a saucepan over medium heat and stir gently as it loosens. Bring the broth to a rolling boil, then check that everything reaches 165°F (74°C) throughout, including the centers of the matzo balls. Big balls take a minute. Be patient.

Microwave: how do I reheat it?

Move the soup to a large microwave-safe bowl and cover it with a vented lid. If it's frozen, run Defrost until you can stir and separate everything. Then heat on High in short bursts, stirring between each one and rotating the bowl if needed. Let it stand briefly, then check a few spots for 165°F, including the centers of the matzo balls. Keep going if it's not there yet.

Do I need a thermometer?

It's the only way to know the centers of the matzo balls are hot. Aim for 165°F (74°C). If you don't have one, cut a ball in half and make sure the middle is steaming hot all the way through.

Can I reheat it from frozen?

Yes. Stovetop works best from frozen. Loosen the block from the container, drop it in a saucepan over medium heat and stir as it melts. Then bring to a boil and check for 165°F throughout.

Can I reheat it twice?

Reheat only what you plan to eat. Each quart serves two, so if you're flying solo, heat half and keep the rest cold for up to 3 days after thawing.

The balls are too big for my bowl.

That's not a question, but we hear you. Use a bigger bowl.

The soup

What's in a quart?

Two matzo balls, one cup of skinless shredded chicken, half a cup of carrots and onions, and homemade chicken broth to fill the quart (4 cups total). Each quart serves two.

Does it have noodles?

No. The standard pack is noodle-free. If you want noodles, cook wide egg noodles separately and add them at serving. The nutrition estimate does not include noodles.

What are the allergens?

Contains wheat and eggs. Caution: it may contain bone fragments, since the broth is made from whole chickens and wings. See the full ingredient list on the soup page.

Is it gluten-free?

No. Matzo meal is wheat.

Is it kosher?

No. We are not certified kosher. The recipe has no dairy and no pork, but it is made in a kitchen without rabbinic supervision, so it is not kosher.

Is the nutrition info exact?

It's an estimate: roughly 280 calories, 30 g protein and 565 mg sodium per 2-cup serving. It is not validated for regulatory labeling.
